Keeping Children Safe on Social Media

From privacy settings to honest conversations, here is a practical guide for parents and teachers to help young people enjoy social media safely.

Social media is a huge part of young people’s lives: a place to connect, learn, and have fun. But it also exposes children to risks like cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and contact from strangers. Keeping children safe is less about banning apps and more about guidance, open conversation, and the right settings.

Set up a safe foundation

  • Review privacy settings together and set accounts to private.
  • Turn off location sharing on posts and profiles.
  • Agree on which apps are appropriate for their age.
  • Keep devices in shared family spaces for younger children.

Talk early and often

The most powerful safety tool is an open conversation. Children who feel they can talk to a trusted adult are far more likely to seek help when something goes wrong.

  • Ask what apps they enjoy and why; show genuine interest, not just concern.
  • Agree that they can come to you about anything, without fear of losing their device.
  • Discuss what is okay to share, and what should stay private.

Recognise the warning signs

  • Becoming withdrawn or anxious after being online.
  • Hiding screens or being secretive about messages.
  • Sudden changes in mood, sleep, or appetite.
