A Senior's Guide to Staying Safe Online

The internet opens up banking, connection, and convenience for older adults. These simple steps help seniors stay confident and protected online.

More older adults are online than ever: banking, video-calling family, and shopping from home. Unfortunately, scammers often target seniors specifically. With a few simple habits, the internet can be a safe and empowering place at any age.

Banking and payments

  • Only use your bank’s official app or website; type the address yourself.
  • Your bank will never call to ask for your PIN, password, or OTP.
  • Set up transaction alerts so you are notified of any activity.
  • If a call feels urgent or threatening, hang up and call the bank directly.

Passwords made simple

You don’t need to memorise dozens of complex passwords. A few good habits go a long way.

  • Use a long, memorable phrase rather than a short complex word.
  • Never reuse the same password for your bank and email.
  • Consider a trusted password manager, or keep a written list somewhere safe at home.

When something feels wrong

  • It is always okay to slow down and ask a family member or friend.
  • Never let anyone you don’t know take remote control of your device.
  • Report suspicious calls or messages; you may protect someone else too.
