The internet opens up banking, connection, and convenience for older adults. These simple steps help seniors stay confident and protected online.
More older adults are online than ever: banking, video-calling family, and shopping from home. Unfortunately, scammers often target seniors specifically. With a few simple habits, the internet can be a safe and empowering place at any age.
Banking and payments
- Only use your bank’s official app or website; type the address yourself.
- Your bank will never call to ask for your PIN, password, or OTP.
- Set up transaction alerts so you are notified of any activity.
- If a call feels urgent or threatening, hang up and call the bank directly.
Passwords made simple
You don’t need to memorise dozens of complex passwords. A few good habits go a long way.
- Use a long, memorable phrase rather than a short complex word.
- Never reuse the same password for your bank and email.
- Consider a trusted password manager, or keep a written list somewhere safe at home.
When something feels wrong
- It is always okay to slow down and ask a family member or friend.
- Never let anyone you don’t know take remote control of your device.
- Report suspicious calls or messages; you may protect someone else too.
