How to Spot and Avoid Online Scams

Phishing, fake offers, and impersonation scams are everywhere. Learn the red flags and simple habits that keep your money and data safe.

Online scams have become one of the most common threats facing internet users today. Fraudsters use email, SMS, social media, and phone calls to trick people into sharing personal information, passwords, or money. The good news: most scams follow predictable patterns, and once you know the red flags, they become much easier to avoid.

Common types of scams

Scammers constantly change their tactics, but most fall into a few familiar categories that target trust, fear, or urgency.

  • Phishing: fake emails or messages that imitate banks, delivery services, or government bodies to steal your login details.
  • Lottery & prize scams: messages claiming you have won something you never entered.
  • Impersonation: someone pretending to be a relative, official, or company in distress, asking for money.
  • Fake shopping sites: too-good-to-be-true deals designed to capture card details.

Red flags to watch for

  • A sense of urgency: "act now or your account will be blocked".
  • Requests for passwords, OTPs, or card numbers: legitimate organisations never ask for these.
  • Unexpected links or attachments, especially with spelling errors.
  • Payment requests via gift cards, UPI to unknown IDs, or cryptocurrency.

How to protect yourself

  • Pause before you click: verify the sender through an official channel.
  • Never share OTPs or passwords with anyone, for any reason.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on important accounts.
  • When in doubt, report it and ask someone you trust.
